July 17, 2026

(Spencer)– A Graettinger man faces multiple charges stemming from a pursuit early Thursday.

According to a press release from the Spencer Police Department, it started around 12:45 am when authorities received a reckless driving complaint of a motorcycle that was westbound on Highway 18 from Ruthven. Speeds were estimated to be over 100 mph. Clay County sheriff’s deputies and Spencer police located the motorcycle at 250th Avenue and Highway 18 on the southeast side of Spencer and tried to pull it over, but the driver accelerated, leading them on a pursuit that went into Spencer, then continued northbound on Grand Avenue to 18th Street at speeds of 95 mph in a 20 mph zone. The chase ended a short time later near the intersection of 10th Avenue East and East 7th Street in Spencer after the motorcycle ran out of gas.

The driver, 28-year-old Troy Peterson of Graettinger, was then taken into custody. He was booked into the Clay County Jail on charges of eluding, driving under suspension, fraudulent use of registration, no insurance, two counts of speeding and two counts of failure to obey a stop sign. Peterson is being held on a $10,000 bond.
