(Spencer)– A head-on collision earlier today (Fri.) in Clay county involving a car and a semi claimed the life of a Cedar Rapids man.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old George Skyler Ellsworth Cole of Cedar Rapids was driving a 1987 Pontiac southbound in the 4800 mile of Highway 71 when he swerved into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 2003 Peterbilt semi driven by 46-year-old Stoney Ray Burris of Livingston, Tennessee.
Ellsworth Cole was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Medical Examiner; Burris sustained minor injuries and was taken to Spencer Hospital.
$40,000 in damage was estimated to the semi; damage to the car was estimated at $4,500.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, Webb Rescue and the Spencer Hospital ambulance.
Authorities say the collision took place around 7:30 this (Fri.) morning and that it remains under investigation.
