(Spencer)– A two-vehicle collision Thursday at the junction of Highways 71 and 18, or the North Y in Spencer, claimed two lives.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says it involved a 2001 Chevrolet S10 that was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection. The driver of that vehicle then pulled into the path of a southbound 2001 Freightliner. A passenger in the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle, who was from Melvin, was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital and later died of injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the semi and a passenger weren’t injured. No names have been released.
Authorities say the collision took place shortly before 1:30 pm and that it’s still under investigation.
The Spencer Police and Fire Departments assisted on the scene, along with the Iowa State Patrol, Bud’s Towing Service and the Medical Examiner.
