Some Huge Changes Could Be In Store For A Heavily Traveled Street In Okoboji

February 25, 2020

(Okoboji)– Some big changes could be in store for a heavily traveled street in Okoboji. Meeting in special session Tuesday, the Okoboji City Council approved a motion to formerly request Imagine Iowa Great Lakes consider taking on the project on Sanborn Avenue between Highway 71 and Spier Park. City Administrator Michael Meyers…Sanborn Ave Improvements01

“So back in December the city presented a list of ideas to the Imagine Iowa Great Lakes group of areas of beautification and improvements within the city of Okoboji. One of those areas was looking specifically at Sanborn Avenue providing trail access on the south side of Sanborn basically from Highway 71 to Spier Park and potentially looking at Sanborn seeing if we can create more of a boulevard feel, sort of a really beautiful entrance into the community. So we presented these ideas to Imagine and then today at our council meeting we kind of formally are going to request that Imagine take a look at Sanborn and see what can be done there.”

Meyers says aesthetics and safety would be the primary goals of the project…Sanborn Ave Improvements02

“Yeah, we think safety can be a huge improvement here by providing a trail on the south side of Sanborn and then having a median go down through the middle of Sanborn we think there can be lots of opportunities for pedestrian crossings for those who live on the north side of Sanborn as well, and then by creating sort of this boulevard style we can hopefully slow traffic down a little bit as well.”

Sanborn Avenue, which goes through a residential area, has been a source of safety concern among some city officials.
