Master Gardner Donation Garden Projects In Buena Vista, Cherokee, Dickinson, O’Brien & Osceola Counties Awarded Grants

February 20, 2020

(Ames)– 29 projects across Iowa promoting food security and healthy eating have been awarded grants through Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s “SNAP-EDUCATION” program. The funds are being made available to Master Gardener volunteers.

Locally, Buena Vista, Cherokee, Dickinson, O’Brien and Osceola counties have been awarded grants.

The grant for Dickinson county will be used to maintain two donation gardens that benefit the Upper Des Moines Food Pantry. The funding for Osceola and O’Brien counties will be used to maintain and expand community donation gardens in Sanborn and Sibley. Buena Vista county will use the funding to create new and expand current donation gardens to benefit low-income senior housing and the food pantry in Newell. Cherokee county plans to partner with elementary students to grow and maintain a donation garden at the county fairgrounds, with the produce being donated to local food pantries.

This is the fifth year the grant funds have been made available to Master Gardner Volunteers.
