Authorities Are Looking For Whoever Shot A Dog That Was Found Badly Injured Tuesday Near Superior

January 08, 2020

(Superior)– Dickinson county authorities are looking for whoever’s responsible for shooting and severely injuring a dog. Arin Miller Kohn, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa tells KUOO news a sheriff’s deputy found the border collie mix Tuesday morning near Superior…Dog Shooting01

“After finding out that he was in very poor condition we had him take him to the vet clinic right away. It wasn’t any hesitation of mine that the dog needed medical treatment so we had him taken there. We let the vet clinic know. They sedated him as soon as he got to the clinic and found out there was bullet fragments lodged in his tongue and his nasal cavity. They removed the ones from his tongue. They couldn’t remove the ones from his naval cavity at this time because it would have caused him more damage. We’re having a tough time getting him to eat because it did affect his mouth area. He’s on pain medications. He’s been very friendly, very caring. So we’re just hoping for a full recovery which the vet said that he should have. He’s not in our care just yet. He’s still at the vet clinic because we want to make sure that he is eating before he actually comes to the shelter. We’re going to ensure that he is completely taken care of, that he’s healed up, that he’s good to go before we actually try to adopt him out.”

Miller Kohn says they don’t know for sure how the dog wound up getting shot, but she says they do have a possible theory…Dog Shooting02

“When I was talking to the deputy yesterday, we had been in contact a few times, he went out to the scene where he did find the dog and there was speculation that we came up with after he had talked with a couple of the neighboring farmers that none of these people, this was not their dog. He followed the blood trail and then it kind of stopped and ended and there wasn’t any other trail in the snow or on the gravel. We came up with the speculation that the dog was dumped and that they tried to shoot the dog but obviously that didn’t go through the way they planned, so. He was lucky enough to come up on the dog, you know, just south of Superior and found him when he did because the dog was in quite a bit of shock.”

Miller Kohn says it drives home an important point…Dog Shooting03

“You know, pick up a phone, not a gun. You know, the county, as a county we definitely need to do better, so.”

Anyone who may have any information into the incident is being asked to contact the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
