“We haven’t done it at the summer theatre since 1990, so 36 years since we’ve seen “Our Town” on our stage. It’s the only play in our season that we’ve done before at the summer theatre so it’s our only repeat in the season.”
Portis says it isn’t your typical production…
“There’s no set, no props, so all of the action is pantomimed. It’s very meta, very theatrical. It kind of gives the audience a peak into the inner workings of the play and how theatre works.”
Rob Doyen, a longtime OST favorite, plays the role as stage manager in “Our Town”. He says it emphasizes the importance of human connections…
“There’s so much going on that sometimes we’re not aware of what’s going on right in front of us. Not only in front of us, but with our connection, relationship with other people. And this play is like that’s the most important thing and it’s the most beautiful thing and the most constant thing that we need, that everybody needs is that connection with one another and actually seeing and knowing who you’re speaking with and sharing life with and sharing things we have in common with. It’s just beautifully written and it’s a pleasure to be able to bring Thornton Wilder’s work to the Lakes Area again after 30 some years.”
