Upcoming Events To Detail Some Little Known Lakes Area History

June 23, 2026

(Arnolds Park)– If you’re a local history buff there are some upcoming events you should know about. One of those is at 6:00 pm Wednesday evening, June 24th at the Dickinson County Museum in Spirit Lake. It will highlight the history of the Arnolds Park Hotel and will combine narratives, photos and family history of the Arnold’s. It’s free of charge.

Another is coming up July 7th. Mary Dreier of the Lakes Area Museum Alliance, or LAMA, says “Echoes on West Lake Okoboji” will take place on the Queen II and will feature two narrators…

“Johnathan Reed who’s the author of two books about lakes area history, and I’ll be another narrator on this cruise. We are going to be highlighting stories and locations that most people don’t know about.”

She says those in attendance will receive something else that’s one-of-its-kind…

“We have compiled a booklet of vintage images, rare vintage images from around the lake and also stories from around the lake, into a booklet that is going to be a limited edition. We’re only printing a hundred of these and these will be given to each and every person that comes aboard the Queen II on that day.”

Dreier says they came up with the idea during a meeting…

“We do a lot of brainstorming during our Lakes Area Museum Alliance meetings and we were trying to think of something that would be really fun, something unique, something different, that we could do that would both promote the history and culture of the area and also provide some funding so that Lakes Area Museum Alliance can do even more good in the area.”

The July 7th event will begin with the Queen II departing the dock at 10:00 am. A limited number of tickets are available and must be purchased by June 28th. The ticket price includes the book and a brunch that will be served during the cruise. You can purchase tickets and find more information by clicking the events tab at lakesmuseums.org or by visiting the Lakes Area Museum Alliance Facebook page.
