(Arnolds Park)– Efforts are underway to establish a unified ordinance between the Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Dickinson county that would regulate the operations of E-bikes and scooters.
Jeremy Kleve, Assistant Arnolds Park Police Chief, told the city council Wednesday evening a joint meeting of representatives of the police departments and Sheriff Greg Baloun was held on the matter last week…
“We’re working on doing a county ordinance for that because we have all the bike trails that go through every town and what the Sheriff would like is one county ordinance and then all the cities adopt that. And we’ve got an ordinance from Des Moines and a couple of other cities that we’ve gotten that we’re kind of taking off and making our own ordinance to try take care of this issue before it gets any worse.”
Kleve says the proliferation of E-bikes and scooters and a large increase recently in complaints of them being operated recklessly, is what has led up to the discussions. The trails are patrolled by a group of volunteers, known as SALT, or Seniors and Lawmen Together…
“Some of their older guys that are out there doing the patrol, they get complaints all day long when they’re out there, they get flagged down because somebody almost got hit going around a curve or whatever on them, so. But it is an issue that we’re looking at.”
The Dickinson County trails do have posted speed limits of 20 miles-per-hour.
