Multiple Departments Contend With Frigid Temperatures While Battling A House Fire Sunday In Terril

January 26, 2026

(Terril)– Firefighters from multiple departments endured frigid temperatures Sunday while battling a house fire in Terril.

Crews were called around 1:30 pm to 201 West Warner Avenue in Terril. Jarod Fischer, Fire Chief for Terril and Wallingford, says calls went out to neighboring departments for assistance with manpower and hauling water…

“For the city of Terril, any structure fires, Milford Fire and Wallingford Fire are automatically paged. And then with the cold conditions, I did have Estherville and Spirit Lake come down for manpower and for water. When Milford Fire Department arrived on scene they did the initial fire attack where the fire was at, and then when other fire departments arrived firefighters packed up and went inside and did some salvage and overhaul and then was trying to locate some hot spots. I know some firefighters also used chainsaws to open some walls to ensure that we had no more fire in the house.”

Fischer says there was considerable smoke and fire damage to the kitchen, breezeway and attic. He says no one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. The fire was discovered by a neighbor who called 911.

Fischer says they’re unsure yet as to a possible cause.

Firefighters were on the scene a couple of hours.

The fire resulted in County Road N-14 through Terril being closed to traffic for awhile.
