(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors heard an update at their meeting this (Tues.) morning from a representative of a company that wants to build a carbon capture pipeline through Iowa and a number of counties locally, including Dickinson. Jeff Skaare (skah-rey) of Summit Carbon Solutions told the supervisors they remain committed to the project even after recent setbacks in South Dakota…
“So we do have an amendment now that allows us to look at opportunities to bring this to other basins. And to be honest, as we look at some of these other basins we still think that this project is extremely important to the ag industry and to Iowa in general and so we have committed to trying to continue with the project.”
Several of those opposed to the pipeline spoke at today’s (Tues.) meeting. One expressed concern over financial incentives the company now says it will provide to landowners who sign agreements, saying it will pit them against their neighbors.
They also question a commitment from Summit Carbon Solutions to provide funds and grants for emergency equipment, saying it likely wouldn’t be enough to cover expenses.
They also expressed concern over the ability for officials to respond, citing a worsening shortage of volunteer firefighters and first responders.
