Soybean Harvest Getting Underway In Some Areas

September 17, 2025

(Undated)– Combines are starting to roll through some earlier planted soybean fields in the region. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services says the recent dry weather has allowed earlier variety beans to dry down nicely…

“A lot of guys will spread out some maturities and different planting dates because you like to spread that bean harvest out, get going early on it and spread it out a little bit, because if you get a stretch of dry weather like we’ve had here recently, you know those beans can really dry up in moisture fast and once they get too dry you start having some shatter loss and you lose some weight just with the lower moisture soybeans, so. Some of these beans that are getting taken out right now I know they’ve been starting out 14, 15 percent but they’ve been drying down to about 13 to 12, right in there, so that’s about perfect. And you want to just keep going at it once it’s like that because they dry down fast and there’s a lot of acres to cover, so getting a little shot of rain every now and then, that’s probably not a bad deal.”

Nesseth says most of the corn is now almost fully mature as well and like the beans, beginning to dry down…

“And one of the things that kind of excites me about some of these corn fields, not all of them are that way but a lot of them are, is green stocks and ripe ears. So that’s always a good sign we’re going to have some good quality grain and some good yields.”

And while rain is in the forecast over the next couple of days, Nesseth doesn’t think it will be a major deterrent.
