(Estherville)– An area community has been awarded a state grant to assist with a water project. The city of Estherville will be getting $500,000 through the Wastewater and Drinking Water Treatment Financial Assistance Program. It will go toward a phosphorous removal project at the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
Estherville is one of 18 communities awarded a total of more than $8 million for various water quality projects. The 2024 program received 32 applications requesting more than $15 million in funding.
The program was the result of a bill passed in the Iowa Legislature that was signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds in 2018. The funding comes from a portion of the tax on metered water. Grants will be awarded through the program annually through 2039.
