Milford City Council Votes To Put Old City Hall Up For Sale

February 04, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– Meeting in special session Monday evening, the Milford City Council voted 5-0 to put the former city hall building up for sale effective August 1st.

The building was most recently rented by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to house equipment to fight wild fires. They have since moved out. The building is now serving as the headquarters for RAGBRAI organizational events. Councilman Shane Hoffman made the motion for putting the building up for sale after RAGBRAI…q…

“Realistically we’d like to get it back on the tax roll. We’d like to see the building used and right now the city just doesn’t have a use for it going forward.”

Hoffman says the city does have a specific use they would like to see for the building…

“We’ve talked to Lakes Regional about potentially using the bays for a potential ambulance opportunity on the south side of Dickinson county. We love the idea, but again we’re still waiting for a comment from them, so we are slightly trying to move forward while we’re moving forward with that, if that makes sense.”

Hoffman says some other potential interest has been expressed in the building as well…

“I think we’ve had a couple of potential business opportunities, but again we haven’t made, I would say, a direction until tonight, so we thought we’d get that ball rolling and just see who steps up and wants to use the city hall.”

Hoffman says they’ve had an appraisal done on the property. He says the estimated cost to demolish the building is roughly $255,000. Hoffman says he’d prefer getting the building back on the tax roll rather than straddling the taxpayers with that cost. The city council will review any bids that are submitted on August 11th, 2025.
