Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected In O’Brien County Layer Flock

February 03, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a commercial layer flock in O’Brien county. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service made the announcement Sunday. It’s Iowa’s second detection of avian influenza within domestic birds in 2025.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture continues to strongly encourage Iowa poultry producers and dairy farmers to bolster biosecurity practices and protocols to protect their flocks and herds of dairy cattle, which are also susceptible to the disease.

Poultry producers or those with backyard birds and dairy cattle who suspect signs of highly pathogenic avian influenza should contact their veterinarian immediately. Possible cases must also be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
