Milford City Council Hears Update From Humane Society Of NW Iowa

December 24, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– Officials with the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa say their shelter on the northeast side of Milford remains at capacity. A representative of the organization gave an update at Monday’s Milford City Council meeting, saying that in the past year they housed 55 cats and 44 dogs that were brought to the shelter from the city of Milford alone. She says only 10 of those dogs were claimed. She adds the shelter remains maxed out as they’re currently housing 105 cats and 18 dogs.

She adds the vast majority of the animals are not spayed or neutered, and that it costs the organization more than $300 per animal to have that done. She says their vet bills are averaging about $50,000 a year.

The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa is continuing its trap, neuter and release program for cats, but the representative says that’s been suspended for the winter.

She says they’re requesting the city of Milford increase its allocation for the upcoming fiscal year. The council will further review the request during upcoming budget discussions.

Similar requests are being made of other cities who utilize the facility.
