(Spirit Lake)– A facility in Spirit Lake that assists those recovering from alcohol or drug addiction continues to experience a high demand. Curt Wiegers is President of the Board of Directors for Discovery House, which operates two residences in the community: one for men and one for women…
“In 2024 we served 54 residents for a total of 4,392 nights. 35 percent of those residents were in Dickinson county. I’m also proud to say that the drug court, the first graduate of the drug court, was a resident of Discovery House. We’re proud of those successes.”
Wiegers says Discovery House has undergone some changes in philosophy within the past year…
“People come to us, their goal is to recover. This isn’t a fancy recovery residence. We want those residents to be successful. That’s why we implemented a policy where if you do test positive for drugs or alcohol you have to move on. We’re not saying we won’t take you back in, we’re just saying you need to go back to treatment. We could fill both of these houses up at capacity. It’s an unfortunate reality. We think having one resident per room and having men and women separate is more manageable. We’ve also re-implemented a 12 step program.”
He says their goal is to get Discovery House back to the roots on which it was founded on back in 1993.
Wiegers made the comments as part of an annual report at Tuesday’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting.
