(Des Moines)– Today (Thurs.) is expected to be one of the busiest day on the roads ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. Brian Ortner of Triple-A Motor Club says more than four million motorists will travel in the region that includes Iowa and Nebraska…

“The 4th of July holiday can be especially dangerous on the road. More teen drivers are out there over the summer, those that just got their license; and obviously there’s a rise in impaired driving due to the holiday festivities.”

Ortner adds a lot of travelers are taking shorter vacations and choosing destinations closer to home. He adds some motorists are cutting csts so they can afford a holiday destination…

“Extras like eating out or buying souvenirs, especially if you’re on a road trip. People are packing water, the drinks, and those snacks in the car instead of picking them up at the gas station potentially when you’re driving to your destination.”

Over 72 million Americans are expected to travel over the Fourth of July.
