(Lake Park)– A group in Lake Park is spearheading efforts to improve the town’s museum. The Friends of The Museum addressed the city council on their proposed project Monday evening. Alison Azevedo is a spokesperson for the group. She tells KUOO news they want to construct an addition on to the Heritage Square Museum…
“A modern annex that will provide additional storage for all the wonderful artifacts. And also for the annex to really showcase the veterans who are from this area and the town of Lake Park, specifically. So a modern facility that we can highlight the servicemen of this community as well as create more of a community area where we can celebrate what Lake Park first was and how it’s grown in many ways since then.”
Azevedo says they need to raise funds to cover engineering costs before they can start applying for grants for the project, which has a price tag of roughly a half million dollars…
“So we have a concept right now and we have an estimate of what we think this 1,500 square foot annex will cost, so we want to get into the design and engineering right now. So we’re hoping that we ginned up enough interest today at the city council meeting that maybe we can find some money to take the next step. Ideally if we got the funding in place we’d be ready to actually break ground in this coming spring.”
Azevedo adds they feel the museum project would fit in nicely with other improvements in the city, including the Silver Lake Park project…
“The Friends of the Museum had an opportunity to meet with the mayor and city manager and it all seems it like it would fit nicely together. I know plans have been in the works for a couple of years so this is something we just came up with in the last few months, but I think the overall master plan, it makes really good sense.”
The Lake Park City Council took no action on the matter Monday evening.
