Mayor Of Spencer Vows City Must & Will Improve Monitoring & Warning Systems For Future Flood Events

October 30, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Spencer Mayor Steve Bomgaars was among those addressing a community meeting Tuesday evening into the flood this past June that ravaged that community. He addressed the steps the city is taking to help warn residents during similar events in the future…

“In terms of better equipment I think that that’s one of the things that we have to do as a city over the winter. We want to put a better plan in place, and I don’t know what that all entails. I’m not sure if it’s better gauges, I don’t know if it’s better monitoring, I’m not sure what that is. But I can tell you this, that we will be studying it, we will be making alterations, and it’s just got to happen.”

Bomgaars says the city will also be utilizing tools available through the Iowa Flood Center that they didn’t know were available until now.

Interim City Manager Kevin Robinson told the crowd the city is working in tandem with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Iowa Homeland Security on mitigation plans for any similar events in the future.

City officials say they’re also working on an app that would push various warnings and notifications to Spencer residents. The Manager of the National Weather Service Office in Sioux Falls was also at Tuesday evening’s meeting. He emphasized the importance of having a NOAA weather radio in your home.
