October 22, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Two new invasive weeds have been found in Dickinson county. Tanner Bouchard, the county’s Weed Commissioner, told the board of supervisors this (Tues.) morning teasel was discovered on some state ground back in January of this year.

In addition, Bouchard says three infestations of oriental bittersweet have also been found in Dickinson county, at various locations along the Little Sioux River. If left untreated, he says the viny weed can actually choke off oak trees. Bouchard says oriental bittersweet is especially difficult to control and treat.

Bouchard says he’s working on efforts to increase public awareness on the new invasive weeds.
