Expert: Cold Should Have Little Impact On Emerging Plants & Tree Buds

February 28, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Ames)– Emerging plants are experiencing a “shock” due to the nose-dive in temperatures. Most, however, should be okay according to Stephanie Harrington of Iowa State University Extension’s Master Gardener Program…

“As long as it’s just the leaves, and we go into a really hard freeze, it will just be a little browning on the leaf.”

Harrington says the temperature nose-dive could nip some of the early buds on trees…

“A lot of our trees are really hardy. Even if they leaf out and we have a frost, they might get a little distorted or something, but they usually bounce back pretty well.”

She notes fruit trees are always at risk this time of year. As for flowers she says that early emerging ones like tulips and daffodils might be a little damaged but will survive.

Experts say the recent much above normal temperatures for this time of year fooled some plants, bringing them back to life much earlier than typical.
