(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this week heard an update from a representative of third Judicial District Department of Correctional Services. She reported on the numbers of those currently on parole or active supervision over the past year in Dickinson county…
“So zero A felonies, so that’s good news; two B felonies, one was drug-related and the other one was ongoing criminal conduct; six C felonies. A C felony is a 10 year, so those most common charges are drug related, theft 1st, burglary 2nd and willful injury; D felonies are five years, there are 26, and those most common charges are burglary 3rd, drug related, OWI 3rd, and theft related. One for felony enhancement and that was a habitual offender of property. 16 on supervision for aggravated misdemeanor events, mostly related to assaults, criminal mischief and theft. Zero serious misdemeanor and zero simple misdemeanor. And to me that is making best use of our resources and only having those on supervision that probably need to be on supervision. They have your more serious charges probably are a little more high risk or high needs.”
She explains what the numbers mean on more of a per-capita basis…
“The population for Dickinson county in 2022 was 18,028. The number of people on active supervision in Dickinson county as of 10/3/23 again was 75.”
She adds the prison population is at the highest it’s been since 2018. 2,830 clients were on supervision throughout the 3rd judicial district, compared to 30,434 statewide.
The Third Judicial District is headquartered out of Sioux City and serves a number of counties in northwest Iowa.
