Spencer Hospital To Hold 19th Annual Breast Cancer Walk

September 21, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk is coming up Sunday, October 1st at Spencer Hospital. Susan Zulk, Vice President of Marketing and Fund Development says this marks the 19th year for the event…

“For that we gather at our park in front of Spencer Hospital on Grand Avenue. We start with registration around 3:30 and it starts at 4:00. During that pre-event time it’s really fun when people are registering because we have several activities going on and it’s a chance to really visit and see familiar faces, and at 4:00 we have a short program which includes some great information about our women’s health services and all that we can do. And then in addition we always have a recognition time for those survivors and those going through breast cancer and we’ll have a moment of silence for those who have passed due to breast cancer.”

She says a big goal of the event is to raise awareness about Breast Cancer…

“Because one in every eight women in the United States is at risk from being diagnosed with breast cancer, and men can be diagnosed too. And so it’s essential to continue to draw attention to the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices such as walking, and getting routine screenings to help detect breast cancer in those early, very treatable stages. And then, of course, we want to show our support for anyone who’s currently facing a breast cancer diagnosis and celebrate survivors as well. And so we want to remind everyone while many communities in October are doing various fundraising events around breast cancer awareness, this is strictly an awareness event. There’s no charge to attend. We encourage everyone and anyone to come and walk and show support for anyone who has faced a breast cancer diagnosis.”

Zulk adds they’ll have t-shirts available, or you can wear a t-shirt from a previous walk if you’ve participated in the event in the past.

Participants are encouraged to wear pink, the designated breast cancer support color.
