Harvest Is Getting Underway In Some Areas

September 20, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The 2023 harvest is getting underway in portions of the region. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says the conditions so far have been ideal…

“You know we’ve been going at cutting corn silage and doing earlage for the past two to three weeks. Some of that corn was, earlier corn, we were able to get in that awhile ago and now some high moisture corn is coming out and the soybean combines are rolling, so we’re knocking some beans out. So a little bit of everything going on right now. A lot of those fields aren’t quite ready but some are and the guys are going after it. Bottom line is it definitely is going to be an earlier harvest.”

And while it’s still very early, Nesseth some preliminary yields for soybeans are promising…

“Some of these soybean yields that are being reported are coming in anywhere from the high 40’s to some over 60 bushel an acre. So I’m quite pleased with hearing results like that. I mean if we can keep getting some of these soybean yields in the 50’s and maybe topping out over 60 bushels, I think that’s a big surprise to a lot of our producers and definitely good for their bottom line.”

Nesseth says corn yields are going to be a lot more variable…

“You know we’ve had some places where they had probably only four inches of rain throughout the summer and so those places got hurt. I know one of our lowest field appraisals where it was corn on corn field that didn’t have much moisture at all, it was down to 46 bushel. So there are some areas that are really going to be hurting. But yield variations it’s just going to really depend on where you’re at, what type of soil. Rotated corn seems to be doing the best. Corn on corn we’re having some problems again and again that’s no surprise to our producers.”

And with the harvest now getting underway comes another reminder for everyone to use extra caution on the roads.
