Another NW Iowa School District Looking At Bond Issue

August 30, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Sheldon)– Another northwest Iowa school district is looking at a bond referendum. Sheldon Superintendent Cory Myer says they’re looking at renovating and adding onto the high school. While the bond issue would be for $19 million. Myer says $14 million in SAVE funds would be used to cover the remainder of the $33 million project. He says the current facility is showing its age and that there are concerns over security and accessibility…

“Some of that infrastructure has started to have some issues and some things that we need to address. Along with that we recently had some conversations about ADA compliance. We did have to go through an ADA compliance review and have some areas of the building we need to work on. The band and choir rooms are not accessible. They have stairs going down into those spaces and so they’re not accessible by all of our students. Our bathroom doors need widened. Those are some of the things that were identified in the compliance issue. And not only are they compliance issues, they’re just things that in general we want to make sure that all of our kids have access to all of the spaces in the building.”

In addition he says the current layout presents some security concerns.

Myer says they’ll be holding public informational meetings in September and October with a vote set for November 7th.
