Jackson County Considering Tax Abatement To Spur Construction Of New Housing

August 18, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Jackson County Commissioners on Tuesday heard about a possible tax abatement plan in Jackson County to help entice housing developers. They heard testimony from a plot owner in Heron Lake that said the abatement would really help her and many others decide upon building or not building. County Administrator Ryan Krosch says Jackson would join a plethora of Southwest Minnesota counties doing the same thing…

“Of the 11 counties I talked to seven have an active tax abatement program, of the seven, all are county wide but only one required the city or school to participate with them. All the rest, it’s up to that individual city or school if they want to participate or not.”

Commissioners expressed interest in following the trend of a five year tax abatement, which would work as more of a refund than a smaller tax bill. You’d still pay the tax, but be reimbursed with a check the full amount when taxes are charged by the county.

Research is ongoing by the county on a possible program similar to what Lakefield currently offers.
