New Speed Limit, Stop Signs Coming To A Busy Location Between Arnolds Park & Milford

April 13, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Some changes are coming to a heavily traveled road between Arnolds Park and Milford. The Arnolds Park city council voted Wednesday evening to install stop signs on 202nd Street at the intersection with Kuchell Trail and to lower the speed limit in that area to 25 mph. The Milford City Council took similar action Monday, as that city also has jurisdiction in that area.

A public hearing at last (Wed.) evening’s Arnolds Park city council meeting did draw some opposition to a reduced speed limit from a resident in that area, who says it isn’t warranted just yet…

“If you look at development on either side, the golf course takes a lot of it, there’s still a field on part of it. It is starting to develop, but at this point there are a lot of areas around here where the speed limit is 35 and even 45 in more developed areas. I think we’re getting premature on what we’re doing.”

Councilman Jason Christensen responded, saying he wants to address it now before things do get to that point…

“I’d rather do something before it’s completely necessary and needed. And like we said if it doesn’t work we can always change it back.”

Councilman Matt Richter said it makes sense to him to have both the stop signs and reduced speed limit…

“It’s a secondary method to make sure people slow down. Yes it’s one thing to lower the speed limit, but if you do both of them it’s kind of like attacking from both sides. So I feel the stop signs and the reduction in speed. It’s just another way to get their attention. It’s one thing to see the speed limit, it’s another thing now wait a minute, I’ve got to stop. So it’s just another way just to slow that up.”

The council will review the effectiveness of the changes this coming September.
