Dickinson Co. Officials Talk About Policy Of Not Charging Utility Companies For Installing Utilities On County R-O-W

March 29, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved requests from two telecommunications companies to install utilities on county-owned right-of-way. County officials say they’ve been seeing an increase in those requests in recent years as broadband services are being expanded to more rural locations. Dickinson County Engineer Cole Budach says it’s been the county’s policy not to charge for the permits given that they’re for a public purpose…

“It’s considered, again, a public utility so for the greater good of the public, as we expand these fiber optic networks, rural customers as well as urban customers are able to get faster internet speeds and more efficient communication by those means.”

Budach adds the companies are responsible for the cost of relocating those services should the county need the right-of-way in the future for road construction or other purposes.
