Officials Reminding Motorists Of “Move Over Law”

March 23, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– A push is underway in Iowa to convince more drivers to move over when they see a vehicle parked along the highway, with its flashing lights on. Meredith Mitts of Triple A Iowa says the statistics are alarming…

“Every year nearly 350 people are struck and killed outside of disabled vehicles throughout the United States.”

She says Triple-A and the Iowa Department of Transportion are launching a social media campaign, to remind drivers of Mover Over laws…

“To help make sure that motorists are educated on what the law is in Iowa, and that they should be moving over for any vehicle on the roadside that has flashing lights on.”

Mitts says everyone has a vested interest: tow-truck drivers, first responders, and stranded motorists…

“Our employees are on the side of the road; our traffic safety partners are working on the side of the road; and then our members who are stranded and waiting for help are potentially on the side of the road and it’s a very dangerous situation.”

Move over laws exist in all 50-states with some variation. In Iowa, drivers are supposed to move over for any vehicle along the road that has its flashing lights on.
