Spirit Lake City Council Approves Agreement With Kiwanis Foundation

March 15, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday evening approved an agreement with the Spirit Lake Kiwanis Foundation. City Attorney-Administrator Gregg Owens tells KUOO news it involves the donation of some land by a developer…

“Lee Seemann, who is responsible for the Seemann Development, Berkley Place out here near the mall, generally, wanted to donate a substantial amount of money to Kiwanis, and through the Kiwanis Foundation. There was a slight problem because our developer agreement, which is driven by future property taxes and our urban renewal area, wouldn’t allow that property to be held by a nonprofit and so what the city council has agreed to do is, and Seemann has agreed, of course, is to amend that agreement to allow this lot, actually there’s two of them, to be held by a nonprofit which is the Kiwanis Foundation. So just had to deal with a small glitch that allows them to take title to that property.”

Owens says the value of the gift is substantial…

“My understanding is that the gift is probably worth at least about $840,000. I think they’re required to hold that property for a certain period of time and after that then they’ll sell the property and the proceeds from the sale of that property will go to all of their various charitable purposes here in Dickinson county, so.”

Owens added the donation will be a win-win for the Kiwanis Foundation and the community as a whole.
