Arnolds Park City Council Votes To Make Allen Avenue A One-Way Street

March 09, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– The Arnolds Park City Council Wednesday evening approved an ordinance revision that will make Allen Avenue between West Broadway and Dewey Street one-way for southbound traffic. City officials say it’s intended to help make West Broadway a little safer as they look at establishing a drop-off and pick-up location for ride share services.

Several residents addressed the council on the matter during a public hearing Wednesday evening, including a business owner in that area who said the current situation is just way too dangerous…

“If when they go to pick people up they would not stay in the center of the road to pick them up, if they would get off and come back a car length on Allen Avenue, or stay one car length forward from that intersection, because man I tell you what, it’s been so many times when I’m standing upstairs looking down and I’m thinking oh, they missed, but.”

A person who lives in the area said she too would be in favor of a centralized drop off and pick up site but said she doesn’t want it near her home…

“I’m in favor of that idea as well except I live down by the water tower and I already get intoxicated people in my car, in my house, in my yard, so I rather it not be that close to me. But I do agree with like at hotels where you stand in line and wait for your taxi. I’m surprised nothing like that has ever been implemented up here.”

She added she would like to see some other safety enhancements made on West Broadway as well…

“On that street, between the two bars, the barbecue and the bar, if you can’t put some sort of a safety barrier like for handicap people or yellow lines or something just to alert people from out of town that they are stumbling into a street. You know, just put some safety things into affect, too, I think would be helpful.”

Concern was also expressed over a lack of parking in that area. Councilman Matt Richter said it’s something they’re continuing to work on. The city council will re-evaluate the one-way traffic on Allen Avenue this coming September to see how it worked.
