Discussion Of E-Bikes On Trails Comes Up At Dickinson Co. Supervisors Meeting

February 14, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– There was discussion at today’s (Tues.) Dickinson County Board of Supervisors over the use of electric bikes, or E-bikes, on the county’s trails system. Erin Reed of the Dickinson County Trails Board says the devices are allowed, but operators need to be mindful of their speed…

“It’s difficult to police certain types of electric bicycles and of course we’re in favor of them because it gets a lot more people out using the trails that would normally go out for a bike ride, or it gets them out for lot longer rides, for sure. They’ve been a boom for our trails system. I haven’t heard of too many complaints about them. You know, road bikers can go just as fast as those people on electric bikes and most of us don’t really like to go 25 mph, so we’re looking at setting our speed limit at 20 mph as part of our policy, and keeping it so that, you know, electric bikes yes; motorized, things with motors that run off gas, no.”

Reed says the county eventually could designate the trails as linear parks, which she says would put more teeth into enforcing things such as speed on the trails.

Reed adds the Dickinson County Trails Board Executive Board has had some discussion about the use of E-bikes on the trails.
