(Milford)– There was discussion at Monday’s Milford City Council regarding plans for a recreational trail south of that city that would connect with the trail in Clay county. Current plans call for the trail in Clay county to cross Highway 71 on the north edge of Fostoria. From there it would run along the east side of the highway to Milford. Milford Mayor Steve Anderson says he has some concerns about safety…
“The trail down in Clay county is on the west side of Highway 71 and so with some of the work that we’ve done here in town we’ve now got the trail going from the spine trail on A34 going over to Highway 71 and so what we’re looking at possibly doing is trying to possibly move that trail off of Q Avenue or leave it partially on Q Avenue but get it so we can get people to cross at 6th street at the stop light here in town. P Avenue we’ve got the park there. We’d be on the back side of some of the businesses. There might be some opportunities there to take the trail that direction, take it down the highway.”
Anderson says that route would also be consistent with a study by the Iowa Department of Transportation that could result in Highway 71 through Milford being downsized from four lanes to three…
“All that kind of ties together. We’re hoping that instead of potentially having bikers crossing down in Fostoria maybe we can get them to cross here at the stoplight and then ride the trail from here to Spencer.”
The city council Monday authorized Anderson to draft a letter to the Dickinson County Trails Board regarding the matter.
