Dickinson County Supervisors Discuss Active Shooter Training

February 08, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Last Thursday’s shooting in Milford has a majority of local businesses, industries, schools, and other entities, both private and governmental, re-visiting active shooter policies and drills. Dickinson county is among them. Supervisor Kim Wermersen reported at today’s (Tues.) Board of Supervisors meeting an active shooter drill held in the courthouse Wednesday of last week, outside of regular hours. But he says he was deeply disappointed in that only four county employees were on hand for it…

“I firmly believe our employees need to go through the experience whether it’s active shooter, whether it’s ALICE training. Something needs to be done that they actually have to go through the drill. All of us. I think it’s vitally important. It’s a shame that we don’t because it can happen like that.”

Wermersen added he would like to see the drills done during actual business hours…

“I think we have to be careful because people have their own weapons. Some of that has to be made aware of. But I’ve got to tell you what, I think every employee should have been there.”

Wermersen added they owe it to the public and employees alike.
