Public Informational Meeting Held On Proposed Pipeline

September 23, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The proposed construction of a pipeline that would carry carbon dioxide through a portion of Dickinson county was the topic of an informational meeting today (Thurs.) in Spirit Lake. Representatives of Summit Carbon Solutions, LLC, the company that wants to build the line, and the Iowa Utilities Board addressed questions and concerns. Josh Byrnes of the I-U-B said it’s going to be a bit yet before the company can petition for a permit to build the pipeline…

Jake Kessner of Summit Carbon Solutions says the proposed pipeline would extend for a little more than 20 miles through eastern Dickinson county. He says they’ve partnered with more than 30 ethanol plants to reduce their carbon emissions. Kessner says the $4.5 billion dollar project would extend through five states…

Kessner added the company would have 350 to 400 employees across the five states. Land agents with the company were at Thursday’s meeting to consult with landowners. Byrnes added that now the meeting for Dickinson county has been held, Summit Carbon Solutions, LLC can begin visiting with landowners regarding easements and compensation. Company officials added they do have the right to exercise imminent domain. In those instances, the value of land would be determined by a county-appointed compensation board.
