Iowa D.O.T Implements Home Testing For Driver’s Instruction Permits

April 20, 2020

(Des Moines)– As another sign of the times we’re going through right now, the Iowa Department of Transportation is now offering driver’s instruction permit testing for students right in their own home. Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley says they received the notification earlier this week from the Iowa Department of Transportation…Permit Testing

“It does need to be done on a computer that is connected to the internet. It can’t be like a phone or an iPAD. It needs to be connected to the internet, so that would be like a computer. And the child’s parent or guardian must first apply to the Department of Transportation to be able to provide the test to their children. And so they actually go on to the website and submit an application called a Proctor Knowledge Exam form. That’s available on the D.O.T’s website and if you’re looking for it it’s under the driver’s license part and it’s called Skip The Trip. It’s a brand new function that the D.O.T is now offering. And upon approval the parent and the student will receive an email with instructions for taking and then administering the test. And then after the test is completed the student will receive an email with the test results and more instructions on what to do next.”

Rowley says if the student successfully passes, he or she will receive an email notification, but they are NOT valid to drive. A copy of the email must then be taken to a driver’s license service center, along with other required identity information that can be found at http://www.iowadot.gov under Licensed Drivers-new driver’s license/ID.
