Those Planning To Vote In June Primary Being Urged To Cast Ballots By Mail

April 15, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the deadline for absentee voting in the June 2nd Primary Election in Iowa being extended. Jordan Moyer oversees elections in the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office. She says the Secretary of State’s Office recently announced the extension…Primary Changes01

“Normally you have 29 days before the election for absentee voting, but the Secretary of State’s Office changed that to we can start mailing out ballots April 23rd which is 40 days before the election, and tentatively it is still May 4th for in-person voting at the courthouse, but that may change.”

Moyer says they’re asking as many people as possible to vote by mail…Primary Changes02

“The Secretary of State’s Office is actually going to be sending out statewide absentee requests to all registered voters. And so you will be getting one of those in the mail, so we are encouraging you to vote by mail just because like I said tentatively we’re not sure if you are going to be able to vote in person.”

Moyer says it isn’t known yet when the Secretary of State’s Office will make that announcement.

There are a few other things you need to know prior to voting in the Primary Election. First of all, you need to make sure the address is correct on your voter registration so ballot request forms are sent to the correct address. You can also download ballot request forms from the Iowa Secretary of State website, VoterReady.Iowa.gov. You also must be registered as a Republican or Democrat to participate in the primary.
