(Milford)– You’ll be able to see firsthand what some students at Okoboji High School have been learning over the past couple of weeks at an event later this week. Principal Brian Downing tells KUOO news a public presentation night will be held later this week where you’ll be able to see the variety of projects the students have been involved in through the project based learning program…
“And they range from the art of projection mapping which of course is how like Disney World puts the amazing images up on their castle; we’ve got groups making escape rooms and a “catching Snowden” class; we’ve got some cooking classes where they made some outstanding things all week; we’ve got kids up at Faust Academy learning about cosmetology as a career; we’ve got a man versus the wild class who as I speak are out hiking Black Elk Peak and learning a lot about outdoor survival; we have classes that are actually creating short films and we’ll have our own short film festival going on at the Milford Pioneer Theatre Thursday; and a class called Project Runway where students have worked to create a fashion show and everything that goes along with that. So that’s just a few of the great things you can see here Thursday night.”
Downing says the program is intended to teach students things they are specifically interested in on a hands-on basis…
“It’s amazing to walk through the halls these last two weeks because it is all just trial and error and revision and testing and learning and doing and creating. And then the capstone of that is performing and presenting what they’ve learned to an authentic audience and that’s why we really want to get a lot of people to come out Thursday night to see and experience what these kids have done over the course of the last nine days.”

“A lot of the classes have ongoing presentations, so you can come any time during that 5:00 to 7:30 window. We do have a few performance based classes like our movies class, like our Project Runway, that we’ll be performing at certain times so on our Facebook page you can find that. It’s also gone out to all our parents. We’ll have maps when you come into the door so you can just show up. We’ll get you to where you need to go. If you’re interested in going to the movie premier at the Milford Pioneer Theatre those will actually start at 4:00 pm so we can get out of their way before their 7:00 shows go on. Again the J-Term Public Presentation Night at Okoboji High School will be held from 5:00 until 7:30 pm.
