Officials: Get Any Traveling Done By Late Tuesday Afternoon

November 26, 2019

(Spirit Lake)– Officials are saying that if you have any traveling to do you should get it done by late this afternoon or wait until late in the day Wednesday.

A winter storm warning will be in effect  for the entire region from 6:00 pm this this evening until Noon Wednesday. Janice Maldonado, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls tells KUOO news people need to take this incoming storm very seriously. She says conditions locally will starting going down hill rapidly by late afternoon or early this evening…Thanksgiving storms01

“Basically it’s going to be for your area late afternoon when you’re going to start seeing some light snow then becoming heavy at times through the evening between 6:00 pm and midnight. But then it will continue through the overnight hours tapering off slowly from southwest to northeast.”

A very strong wind, with gusts maybe approaching 50 mph, will move into the region tonight  and will persist through the day Wednesday, causing extremely poor visibility and perhaps even blizzard or near blizzard conditions.

Maldonado says conditions should improve Wednesday night, but she says the respite is going to brief as yet another strong winter storm will likely move into the region right on its heels…Thanksgiving storms02

“The next one will be Thanksgiving Day. We’ll be expecting light snow and also freezing drizzle and then it will continue Friday into Saturday with another round of snow and rain. Along with that we’re expecting windy conditions for Thursday and Friday. So for those people that have travel plans we are right now encouraging them to keep monitoring the forecast and also be prepared. If you are traveling by car make sure you have a winter weather kit ready and prepare for that and take a look at the latest road conditions before you head out.”
