October 30, 2019

(Spencer)– No injuries were reported Tuesday in a collision in Clay county involving a school vehicle and a semi.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 81-year-old Roger Stephas of Spencer was driving a 2001 Sterling semi eastbound in the 2000 mile of County Road B40 and was attempting to make a wide turn into a filed drive. Authorities say 22-year-old Justin Rottinghaus of La Porte City, Iowa was driving a 2018 Ford Expedition owned by the Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District and was behind Stephas when he collided with the rear of the semi trailer.

No damage was reported to the semi trailer; damage to the school vehicle was put at $8,000.

Stephas was cited for improper use of lanes and Rottinghaus was cited for failure to stop in an assured clear distance.

The collision took place around 3:45 pm.
