Vehicle Goes Into Ditch & Catches On Fire; Driver Escapes Injury

October 28, 2019

(Spencer)– An Everly man escaped injury Friday after losing control of a vehicle that went into the ditch and caught on fire.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 65-year-old Randall Dykstra lost control of a 2002 Ford pickup as while traveling northbound in the 2900 mile of 110th Avenue. Deputies say the vehicle left the road and went into the east ditch. Deputies say Dykstra attempted to back up and got stuck, and that the vehicle’s hot exhaust pipe started some grass on fire underneath it. Dykstra was able to get out of the vehicle before it was completely engulfed in the flames.

The Everly and Fostoria Fire Departments extinguished the fire.

Dykstra was cited for failure to maintain control.

The incident took place around 12:30 pm Friday.
