(Spirit Lake)– This week marks the annual observance of National 4-H Week. This year’s theme is “inspire kids to do”, and Hannah Brockshus, County Youth Coordinator for Iowa State University Dickinson County says they’re encouraging youth to take part in hands-on learning experiences…
“One of the things that we’re focusing on is the youth’s ability to choose their adventures through 4-H with many different project areas and club or after school groups to choose from.”
Brockshus says in Dickinson county, about 130 kids in grades 4th-12th are involved in 4-H clubs while another 52 kids in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade, or Clover Kids, are involved in after school activities. Brockshus says they’re always looking to grow those numbers, adding there will be a special event later this week for youth interested in getting involved in 4-H…
“If there are youth interested in getting involved in 4-H, go ahead and talk to your families at home and bring them to our open house this Thursday, October 10th from 3:30 until 6:30 pm. Another great way to get more information is to ask the youth that you’ll see wearing their 4-H green t-shirts in school this week. Talking to your peers is a great way to learn more.”
Brockshus says they’re also holding a scarecrow contest this week as another way to promote National 4-H Week with six different scarecrows on display…
“We have a mix of community organizations including a seed company and the Lakes Area Young Professionals with scarecrows as well as different 4-H groups.”
The scarecrows are on display throughout the week at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds.
