(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County authorities are again alerting the public to a phone scam. The Sheriff’s Office says scammers are calling residents claiming to be a “sergeant” or a bondsman, stating that a friend or family member is in jail and needs immediate payment for bond. They request money be sent electronically.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office does not collect bond money electronically. They add they will never ask for personal or financial information in that manner, adding that legitimate bonding processes do NOT happen through unsolicited phone calls.
They say if you get such a phone call you not give out any information or payment and just hang up. Such calls should be reported to local law enforcement directly using a trusted number.
