Breast Cancer Awareness Walk To Be Held Sunday (Oct. 6th) In Spencer

October 03, 2019

(Spencer)– The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to help commemorate the designation, Spencer Hospital will be holding its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Susan Zulk, Vice President of Marketing at Spencer Hospital, tells KUOO news it will be held this Sunday, October 6th, beginning with registration at 3:30 pm at the hospital park…Breast Cancer Awareness Walk01

“We plan to register in the park. The weather forecast is looking beautiful. If not we will register within the hospital lobby, and then people will have the option to walk indoors or outdoors, too. We have a nice walk down Spencer’s Grand Avenue. Participants that come will receive a bright pink t-shirt that we will encourage them to wear, and so it’s really fun to see that sea of pink, and people out there supporting one another, helping draw awareness to breast cancer issues, support of breast cancer screening and also prevention techniques as well.”

Zulk says the theme for this year’s walk is “lean on me”…Breast Cancer Awareness Walk02

“Typically we have all kinds of people, men, women and children, that come to the walk. We have people going through breast cancer, survivors who have gone through it, also family members who have felt the affect of it. At one time or another in our life we all know that we’ve needed a support system and someone to lean on, and so we take turns at that and showing support to one another and so lean on me is the theme. The front of our t-shirt, actually the L in the lean is a ribbon and on the back we have the chorus and then our women’s health coordinator, Sara Taylor, is going to sing the verse and then we’re going to invite everyone to join in with us in singing the chorus to Lean On Me. I think it’s going to be a really nice moment at our walk during the program part before we actually commence walking.”

Zulk adds the event is free to anyone who would like to participate…Breast Cancer Awareness Walk03

“We are very fortunate to have great sponsors and they all are healthcare entities in our region that have a role in breast cancer prevention as far as our family practice providers to Avera Medical Group Spencer, detection to Spencer Hospital Diagnostic Imaging, and also treatment if an image, if there is an issue identified. Northwest Iowa Surgeons are a sponsor, Abben Cancer Center is a sponsor, and the Avera Home Medical of Spencer Hospital is a sponsor as well.”

Zulk says there will also be an opportunity to make a freewill donation during the event to the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation for Women’s Health Services or the Abben Cancer.
