September 30, 2019

(Spirit Lake)– Free fitness classes will be available to Dickinson county residents on Sundays starting in October. Brandon Rohrig of Dickinson County Public Health says they’re being made possible by the Healthy Hometown Initiative…Free fitness classes01

“We had a large group meeting for our Healthy Hometown, basically our community wellness initiative, and one of the ideas someone brought up was to, they’re currently doing a free fitness class every month and it would be really cool and or great if they could get others on board and I had a team of a couple of different members reach out and contacted four businesses and they all are very interested in donating their time to increase the wellness of our lakes area.”

Rohrig says the free fitness classes will be offered on Sundays beginning October 6th and will rotate among four different sites, with each offering a different activity…Free fitness classes02

“It very much depends on which one we’re going to. For instance, Level 10 Fit and four or five different classes that you could rotate between. The Studio has a different class. They’re mainly going to focus on gentle movements but she could do whatever they would like with that one. The YMCA has a wide variety of different trainers that can put on different classes and Yoga Okoboji is going to be doing Yoga but we all know that one yoga class is the same is another.”

Rohrig adds they plan to offer the free exercise classes throughout the winter months…Free fitness classes03

“There’s a flyer, there’s a Facebook post on the Lakes Regional Healthcare website, or Facebook as well that has all the different dates. It will end the week before Memorial Day weekend.”

The Healthy Hometown Initiative replaced what formerly was the Blue Zones Project which included Spirit Lake. The Healthy Hometown Initiative was expanded to include not only Spirit Lake but all of the communities in Dickinson county.
