(Des Moines)– Iowa’s 99 counties are in for new and improved voting machines.
Secretary of State Chet Culver says he’ll hand out more than 17 million dollars to the state’s 99 counties to upgrade voting systems.
Culver says the new machines will be in place in time for next year’s elections, thanks to money appropriated by congress in the wake of the disputed 2000 Presidential Election.
The funds will be divided using a formula based on the number of voters in each county.
Locally, Clay county will receive 114,600-dollars; Dickinson county will get 115,460-dollars; Emmet county will receive 91-thousand dollars; O’Brien county will get 106-thousand; Osceola county will receive 80-thousand dollars; and Palo Alto county will get 89-thousand.
The new voting systems are to be in place for the 2006 General Election. Culver wants the machines in place for a trial run during this fall’s city and school elections.
