(Milford)– Two issues all too familiar with Milford city council members were back before the council Monday: the Boji Bay proposal and the Lower Gar Outlet.
On the first issue, the council voted four to one to approve a scaled-back assistance package for Boji Bay amounting to 20-thousand dollars each from the city of Milford and Milford Municipal Utilities and a 20-thousand dollar grant that will be applied for through the Corridor of Opportunity. In exchange, Boji Bay will sell season passes to Milford residents for 20-dollars each. The proposal is for this year only. It’s contingent on formal approval by Milford Municipal Utilities. Councilman Bud Kyle cast the lone no vote.
Regarding the Lower Gar Outlet, the council refined its stance saying the county can move ahead with plans to install additional culverts or a box culvert at its expense as long as the county signs an agreement holding the city of Milford harmless from any future liability that could arise from downstream flooding that would result from anything being done with the outlet. The council directed City Administrator Brian Reed to write a letter to that extent to the county. They also again expressed interest in finding and reviewing agreements reportedly made with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the 1993 flood regarding the Lower Gar Outlet and the flood footprint of the Little Sioux River.
On another matter, the council directed Reed to send a letter to the County Engineer asking him to initiate proceedings to reduce the speed limit on a portion of 13th Street in Milford. Council members want the limit on that portion of the street east of “R” or “S” Avenue reduced to 35 miles-per-hour. The county has to act on the matter since it has partial jurisdiction over the road.
