Spirit Lake Council Awards Paving Projects

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Meeting in special session, the Spirit Lake City Council Monday awarded a low bid on several concrete paving projects in the area of Highway 71 and the Ferguson Business Park on the city’s southwest side.

The low bid of 584,367-dollars from Wick’s Construction came in well below the engineer’s estimate.

Streets to be paved include 32nd, 33rd, 34th and 36th streets near Highway 71 and a portion of Zenith Avenue. The project will also consist of the installation of turning lanes and a traffic signal at 34th Street and Highway 71. The project won’t start until after Labor Day with completion slated yet for this fall.

The council also reviewed plans and approved architectural standards for the new YMCA; and they signed off on agreements from the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Iowa Northwestern Railroad to repair two crossings on 15th street. One is just west of the American Legion; the other is behind Pure Fishing. The D-O-T will foot 60 percent of the bill; 20 percent will come from the railroad and the other 20 percent from the city. The funding make-up is different for the crossing behind Pure Fishing where the local share will be split between the city and county…with each chipping in 10 percent. A portion of 15th street in that area lies within the county’s jurisdiction.

The council also reviewed a letter from the Francis Sites Homeowner’s Association expressing concern over a lack of progress in approving the Hawn Subdivision. The subdivision would allow for the extension of a road from a marina storage shed that would take a load off traffic in the Francis Sites area. The letter blames the city for a lack of action. Mayor Eric Nielsen and council members take exception to that. They say the developer of the proposed subdivision could grant or sell the marina an easement to put the road through. Nielsen says he’ll express that in a formal reply to the association’s letter.
