SL Council Adds 13th Street Deadend To List Of Public Access Sites

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Wednesday adopted a resolution adding the dead-end of 13th Street to the list of areas where the city allows public docks to be located.

The council took the action after hearing from Lucille Place, a neighboring property owner who was concerned over parking and noise issues. To address the concern the council added a provision that prohibits parking on the north side of 13th street near the lake.

The council also signed off on a REAP grant the city is applying for through the Department of Natural Resources. Terry Yarns represents the council on the city’s Betterment Committee. He says the grant would fund construction of a new shelter house at Gilbert Park. He says it would be part of an overall project to enhance the park, which would include memorials to world champion trapshooters that grew up in Spirit Lake or adopted Spirit Lake as their home. They include Duke Gilbert, Johnny Jahn and Bob “Shooter” Allen. Yarns says the project would get underway next year if the city lands the grant.

Council members also got some good news Wednesday when they learned the city’s health insurance premium for the upcoming year will be five and-a-half percent LOWER than the current year. The city had budgeted for a 20 percent INCREASE.

The council also approved hiring the Howard R. Green Engineering firm to conduct a water and sewer rate study at a cost of 16,970-dollars.
